I've spent much of 2012 purging my apartment of stuff I don't need or love -- cleaning out my closet every few months, organizing cabinets and emptying drawers. But there was one trouble spot that terrified me -- whatever was lurking under my bed.I'd like to blame it on a phobia I had as a kid (I had to make it from the light switch to my mattress in one running jump to avoid the gremlins who obviously lived underneath), but in truth I had no recollection of what I had boxed up down there, or more likely, unceremoniously kicked there in a fit of "unexpected guests" panic.
Fortunately, recent success at consigning clothes emboldened me. I knew there was a treasure trove of designer clothes down there -- much of it with tags in tact. So I grabbed a broom, slapped on some rubber gloves and went to work. I ended up hauling two duffel bags of awesome, but forgotten stuff (Marc Jacobs, Tory Burch, J.Crew) to Second Time Around on M Street. As much as I loved some of the pieces, I told myself that if I went a year without needing them, I probably never would. But there was one item I could not part with. In fact, I considered kicking myself for forgetting about it -- a hand-beaded linen cami snagged on sale years ago.
It is quite literally the perfect summer cami -- pair it with jeans for a night out, or denim shorts for daytime fun. The moral of the story -- clean under your bed. You never know what you might find.
